Jack Eichel ends it 38 seconds into overtime as Golden Knights rally past Utah 5-4

Utah’s blue line built the first surprise

For long stretches, Utah looked as if it might turn a 21-shot night into a winning one. Vegas struck first at 9:38 of the opening period when Victor Olofsson scored off a Shea Theodore setup, but the Mammoth flipped the score in a burst at the end of the frame. Zac Jones tied it at 18:21, then Liam O’Brien put Utah ahead at 19:01, with Kevin Stenlund involved in both goals.

That late swing mattered because Utah did not waste the opening it created. Artem Duda, another defenseman, scored at 14:06 of the second period off assists from Jack McBain and Kailer Yamamoto, stretching the lead to 3-1. By night’s end, Utah had received goals from Jones, Duda and Tomas Lavoie on the back end, plus Stenlund’s three-assist game. It was an efficient spread of offense even if the shot totals never tilted Utah’s way.

The Mammoth also survived a heavy workload for a while. They finished with 21 blocked shots, compared with just five by Vegas, and Sebastian Cossa turned aside 30 of 35 shots. Those numbers show how much of the evening Utah had to absorb, but until the third period its finishing and shot blocking were enough to keep control of the scoreboard.

Vegas’ stars erased the clock

Vegas kept leaning on volume, and eventually its best players forced the game back open. The Golden Knights put 35 shots on net and held a slight edge in faceoffs, 32-30. Jeremy Lauzon cut the deficit to 3-2 at 5:19 of the third, with Noah Hanifin and Nic Dowd assisting, and the chase never really relaxed after that.

The equalizer arrived at 13:06, when Mark Stone scored off feeds from Eichel and Theodore. Utah answered again at 18:29 through Lavoie, assisted by Stenlund and Jones, but that lead lasted only 1:03. Tomas Hertl tied it at 19:32 from Mitch Marner and Eichel, turning what looked like a Utah escape into one more opening for Vegas.

Overtime needed just 38 seconds. Eichel finished it from Stone and Theodore for his third point of the night and the Golden Knights’ first lead since the opening period. Theodore matched Stenlund with three assists, while Stone and Hertl supplied the late scoring touch. Vegas did not play a clean defensive game, but its top-end production kept arriving until there was no time left for Utah to answer.

Our take: pressure won, but neither side was tidy

Our take: Vegas earned this comeback on pressure, not perfection. A 35-21 edge in shots and a small faceoff advantage gave the Golden Knights more chances to recover from their mistakes. Eichel’s goal and two assists, Theodore’s three-assist night, and Stone’s goal plus assist were the difference in the end. Still, allowing four goals on 21 shots and finishing with 23 giveaways is a warning inside the win. The offense rescued them; the defending did not.

Utah leaves with the sharper frustration because two different leads slipped away. The Mammoth were up 3-1, then up 4-3 with 1:31 left in regulation, and they still had Stenlund driving offense from the middle of the lineup. But 29 giveaways and 35 shots against are hard numbers to escape. When a team is blocking 21 shots and its goalie is facing 35, it is asking a lot of every other part of the game to stay perfect.

There is encouragement for Utah in where the scoring came from. Three defensemen found goals, O’Brien added another, and Cossa handled the heavier shot load competitively. The next step looks less glamorous: reduce the loose puck moments and make that kind of scoring night easier to protect. For Vegas, the lesson is almost the mirror image. The Golden Knights proved they can overwhelm a game with skill and repeat pressure, but they also made the night far harder than a 35-shot performance should have been.
