DETROIT — Dylan Garand recorded his first NHL shutout, stopping 22 shots as the New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.

Garand earned the shutout in his fourth NHL game. The Rangers goalie had gone 2-0-1 in three games late in the previous season for New York, but Friday marked his first career clean sheet in the league. New York entered the game in a demanding stretch, playing its third game in four nights to open the season.

The Rangers built their win on goals from Sean Durzi and Eeli Tolvanen. New York improved to 2-1-0 after moving for a second straight night following a 5-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

Durzi put the Rangers ahead 1-0 at 5:12 of the game with a power-play goal. The score was Durzi’s first with New York after he was traded from the Utah Mammoth on July 1 as part of the Vincent Trocheck deal, according to the game report.

New York’s power play again created a chance to extend the lead at 7:10. Durzi appeared to score a second power-play goal, but the goal was overturned after the Red Wings challenged for offside. That review prevented the Rangers from adding to their first-period advantage at that moment and left the game at 1-0.

The Red Wings received contributions from their defensive corps and continued to test the Rangers’ structure as the game progressed. In the first period, Anton Johansson, making his NHL debut for Detroit, hit the post later in the opening frame, a moment that underscored Detroit’s ability to generate high-quality looks even while being held off the scoreboard.

Shot totals through two periods suggested a measuring stick for both teams’ pace and pressure. Detroit managed 20 shots through two periods, yet it produced limited scoring chances as the game wore on and finished the night with only two shots in the third period.

New York maintained control of the game’s final stretch, protecting its lead as the clock moved toward the end of regulation. Tolvanen ultimately sealed the result by scoring into the empty net at 18:44 to make it 2-0.

Tolvanen’s empty-net marker was his second goal of the season and completed the Rangers’ 2-0 margin. In the season opener for Detroit, John Gibson made 19 saves as the Red Wings fell just short of finding an equalizer despite sustaining stretches of offensive pressure earlier in the game.

With the shutout, the Rangers secured the result on a two-goal night and improved their early-season record, while Detroit entered the game carrying a 0-1 start after the setback in its opener.

The win also reflected how quickly New York’s lineup was adjusting in the early portion of the season. Durzi’s first goal with the club and Tolvanen’s second of the season highlighted the Rangers’ ability to convert key moments, particularly on special teams, while Garand’s performance provided the consistent goaltending needed to close it out.
