The Dallas Stars took control early and never looked back, blanking the Buffalo Sabres 4-0 at KeyBank Center on Thursday. Mikko Rantanen led the offence with a goal and three assists, while Jake Oettinger turned in 25 saves to register his second straight shutout as Dallas improved to 2-2-0.

Oettinger’s shutout was his follow-through from Monday, when he made 13 saves in a 5-0 win against the San Jose Sharks. Against Buffalo, the goaltender completed the same kind of defensive statement, limiting the Sabres to 14 shots on goal in the final tally provided by the game recap.

Dallas scored first in the opening period at 9:03. Jason Robertson converted a 2-on-1 by skating down the right side with Rantanen and then snapping the puck low blocker-side past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.

The Stars extended their lead in the second period at 9:36 when Sam Steel scored. Steel found the net by firing a shot from high above the slot through traffic and between Luukkonen’s pads.

Rantanen added to the separation at 13:57 to make it 3-0. The sequence began with Nils Lundkvist’s shot from the left point that bounced off the end boards to Rantanen, who backhanded it into the open net after Luukkonen was pulled to the other side.

Roope Hintz capped the scoring late in the second period with the Stars’ first power-play goal of the season, extending Dallas’s lead to 4-0 at 15:34. Hintz received a pass from Wyatt Johnston in the right circle and finished with a top-corner shot on the far side.

Luukkonen made 14 saves for Buffalo, which fell to 2-2-0. Dallas also received additional playmaking from Wyatt Johnston, who finished with three assists on the night.

With the win, the Stars entered the game carrying momentum from their two consecutive victories, having won two straight heading into the final period of Thursday’s matchup. The Sabres, meanwhile, were held scoreless despite generating offensive opportunities that Oettinger and Dallas defended through a complete shutout performance.
