Prime Minister Mark Carney will return to Turkey from Oct. 21 to 23 to advance trade and defence ties.
The Story
Prime Minister Mark Carney will return to Turkey later this month, with his office saying the visit will run from Oct. 21 to 23.
Carney was in Turkey in July for the NATO summit, and this trip will begin in Ankara, where he will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Talks in Ankara are expected to focus on energy and mining, climate, defence and security, as well as interpersonal ties, according to Carney’s office.
Carney will then travel to Istanbul to meet with Turkish business leaders and investors, with the discussions focused on energy, aerospace, advanced technologies, and mining and critical minerals.
The trip follows criticism from LGBTQ+ groups related to Canada’s decision not to join European peers in criticizing raids on Turkish organizations that advocate for minorities, as described in Carney’s office briefing.
The evidence provided also says Canada is negotiating a trade agreement with Turkey, that bilateral trade has increased 50 per cent in the past five years, and that Turkey is considering buying Canadian nuclear-energy technology.
