Carney says Trump-Russia diesel supply deal undermines efforts to end war, PMO says

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about a new U.S.-Russia diesel fuel supply agreement, saying it runs against efforts to end the war in Europe.

The Story

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on October 11 about a new diesel fuel supply agreement between Russia and the United States that President Donald Trump announced on Friday, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The PMO said Carney made clear the agreement runs against the efforts of Canada and its allies to end the war in Europe by providing Russia with new revenue.

In a readout from the office, the PMO said the leaders also discussed increasing coordination with allies to help Ukraine with its air defence needs.

The PMO noted that Trump posted on social media on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” which the PMO said appeared to be news to Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy said on social media that he supports Trump’s “energy ceasefire” but that he is awaiting details from the White House, and he added that Russia must back it up by ending its strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
