Canada–India trade talks advance as Sidhu leads mission; 34 deals nearly $300M

International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu says 34 commercial agreements worth almost $300 million came out of Canada’s recent India mission.

The Story

International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu says trade talks between Canada and India advanced over the last week as he led a trade mission to New Delhi and Mumbai.

According to a statement from Sidhu’s office, the mission included representatives from nearly 300 Canadian businesses and exporters and resulted in 34 commercial agreements worth almost $300 million.

The statement says Sidhu met with India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, in both New Delhi and Mumbai to push forward trade talks.

Sidhu’s office says Canada and India are seeking to conclude negotiations for a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of the year.

The federal government says negotiations for the agreement were formally launched nearly a year ago by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 leaders’ summit in South Africa.

The government also says Carney confirmed on Thursday that Modi will visit Toronto and Ottawa on Dec. 11 and 12, ahead of this year’s G20 summit in Miami.

The federal Liberals have set a goal of doubling non-U.S. exports over the next decade, and aim to double two-way trade with India to $70 billion annually by 2030.
