IIO requests witnesses after arrest in South Surrey on Oct. 12

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is asking for witnesses after a person was injured during an arrest in South Surrey on Oct. 12.

The Story

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is looking for witnesses to an arrest in South Surrey on Oct. 12.

According to the IIO, the Surrey Police Service (SPS) informed it of an arrest involving a person who was injured during the arrest.

The IIO says SPS received a report around 6:45 p.m. of a person attempting to break into a home in the 13500 block of 14th Avenue.

When SPS officers arrived, the IIO says they located the suspect entering a basement suite.

The IIO reports that SPS surrounded the residence and brought in members of the RCMP Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services.

The IIO says ERT officers made entry to the basement suite to make an arrest, and during the interaction the suspect jumped through a broken window and was injured.

The IIO says the suspect was taken into custody and to hospital for treatment.

The IIO adds that SPS alerted it to the interaction the next day and it began its investigation.
