Central Saanich police say a woman found dead at a DL Bins drop-off facility on Oldfield Road has been identified, and the case is now with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit.
The Story
Central Saanich police say they have identified a woman found dead at a waste-disposal facility in Central Saanich on Tuesday morning and are working to notify her family.
Police said the discovery was at the DL Bins drop-off facility at 6844 Oldfield Rd., where employees were stationed Tuesday evening to allow police officers into the gated site. Officers, a Central Saanich police vehicle and an unmarked police pickup were seen inside the compound.
DL Bins’ website had listed the Oldfield Road yard as closed due to an emergency, but the location reopened Wednesday. Paul Chypiska, general manager of Mission Island Group, the parent company of DL Bins, said the closure was related to the police investigation. “We’re heartbroken that somebody was found at our facility,” Chypiska said in an interview on Wednesday.
Chypiska said the facility receives a mix of small and large commercial and residential bins and commercial compactor-style trucks from across the region containing materials such as wood and construction materials and food waste. He said the waste is manually sorted to reduce what needs to be sent by truck to the landfill.
Central Saanich police said the investigation has been turned over to the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit. Earlier, police had described the woman as possibly in her 30s, heavy-set and about five-foot-nine, with brown hair and blond highlights and a horizontal scar on her inner right forearm.
Police asked anyone with information to contact the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit information line at 250-380-6211.
