The Howe Sound pulp mill in Port Mellon near Gibsons, B.C., will remain open after Domtar reached an agreement with the provincial government.
Domtar says the company will undergo previously scheduled maintenance before returning to regular operations.
In a statement on Thursday, Domtar thanked the provincial government for working with it as the forestry sector faces “extraordinary pressures.”
The statement said, “While the forest industry continues to face significant economic and competitive challenges, Domtar believes this collaboration represents an important first step toward supporting a strong and sustainable future for the sector.”
The mill employs approximately 400 people in Port Mellon on the Sunshine Coast.
