The NHL has launched a new “Hot for Hockey” campaign that draws on the tone and tropes of hockey romance, with stories available in 60-to-90-second audiobook-style episodes on Spotify.
The campaign stories are written and narrated by hockey romance authors and feature real NHL players and rivalries, while adopting the genre’s style.
The NHL’s commissioner, Gary Bettman, said the league believes there is value in pursuing the audience that hockey romance has attracted, pointing to new fans acquired last year through related programming.
Bettman said the league will use marketing campaigns aimed at different audiences and added that the data is “overwhelming” regarding new fans, saying the NHL is “thrilled” if they want to come be part of the game.
The “Hot for Hockey” stories include “Jack of Hearts,” featuring Vegas Golden Knights forward Jack Eichel; “The Storm Between Us,” featuring Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho; and “Chasing Connor,” featuring Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid.
The campaign is also described as including a story centered on Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty titled “The Summer I Turned Gritty.”
