The Story
Two people were pronounced dead at the scene of a vehicle collision involving four pedestrians at Tsawwassen Mills, and two others were airlifted to hospital, Delta Police said.
Delta Police added that the identities of the deceased will not be released as investigators work with the BC Coroners Service and support families affected by the incident.
Police reiterated that there is no information to suggest the collision was intentional, while noting investigators have not yet confirmed whether a medical emergency experienced by the driver contributed to the crash.
Investigators have gathered statements from witnesses, reviewed surveillance footage and examined information related to the incident, with the investigation being led by the Delta Police Traffic Collision Team.
Delta Police said the collision was not related to the Truth and Reconciliation Walk taking place nearby, but the area where the collision occurred was scheduled to host a House Post unveiling after the walk; police said there is no information suggesting a connection between the collision and the event.
In a statement, Delta Police media relations officer Staff Sergeant Mike Whiteley said the department recognizes the impact of the incident on victims, families, witnesses, first responders and the broader community.
Whiteley also said investigators are working to determine what occurred and to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
