B.C. winter outlook points to above-normal temperatures as a strong-to-very strong El Niño persists

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s seasonal outlook suggests above-normal temperatures for much of Canada in the coming months, including B.C., with a strong-to-very strong El Niño likely through January to March 2027.

The Story

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s seasonal forecast calls for above-normal temperatures across much of the country from October through December and into the beginning of winter.

The outlook is linked to a persistent El Niño pattern across the Northern Hemisphere, with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration saying it “continues […] to strengthen, with a strong-to-very strong El Niño likely through January-March 2027.”

For Vancouver and surrounding areas, the forecast indicates an 80% chance temperatures will remain above normal.

In B.C., above-normal temperatures could delay typical winter conditions, even though winter would still arrive.

The same temperature pattern also points to below-normal snowfall being favoured for B.C., which may affect skiers and snowboarders who were expecting more typical snow conditions.
