Composer Hans Zimmer says “If this was a soccer match, I’d be rooting for Canada,” ahead of his “The Next Level” tour with Canadian stops next year.
The Story
Hans Zimmer says he is “rooting for Canada” as he prepares to bring his live show across North America, including a stop in Vancouver.
Zimmer, who is German-born and 69, made the remark in an interview from his Los Angeles studio, saying, “If this was a soccer match, I’d be rooting for Canada.”
He said he has “so much right about Canada,” adding that it is “such a wonderful cultural place,” and he later said, “Especially at this moment in time, I am so on your side.”
In the interview, Zimmer noted he pays attention to what he says because political comments can be tricky, saying he previously “got into trouble” after making comments about U.S. President Donald Trump.
Zimmer also said he believes music helps people connect beyond political divisions, describing his 19-piece band and saying, “For just the three hours that we play, things seem to be OK.”
The tour, announced as “The Next Level” tour, kicks off Feb. 17 in Hartford, Conn., with stops next year that include Ottawa, Quebec, Hamilton and Vancouver.
Zimmer and his band will perform his repertoire reimagined as a high-energy rock concert, with Zimmer performing on keyboards and guitar.
Zimmer also said his connection to Canada is personal through his longtime creative partnership with Quebec director Denis Villeneuve, whom he described as approaching collaboration with “a genuine love” and “genuine kindness” that “protect[s] you all the time.”
He said he has scored both of Villeneuve’s “Dune” films and is working on the third, describing Villeneuve’s direction as treating the next film as “autonomous” and “completely different.”
