B.C. CRT awards $35,000 after woman repeatedly shared intimate images online

The B.C. Civil Resolution Tribunal says it ordered a woman to pay a man $35,000 after she breached a protection order by repeatedly sharing intimate images online.

The Story

In a Sept. 25 decision, the B.C. Civil Resolution Tribunal ordered a woman to pay a man $35,000 after the tribunal found she created multiple fake social media accounts and posted eight intimate images of him, some showing his genitals. The tribunal found the applicant and respondent were in an intimate relationship for almost four years, ending before the images were shared.

The tribunal said the man first discovered one of the images in January 2024. In an earlier order, the tribunal had directed the respondent to destroy the images and make every reasonable effort to prevent them from being available to others, according to tribunal member Jeffrey Drozdiak.

In its latest decision, the CRT said the respondent continued to share the man’s image, breaching a protection order 14 times between March 12 and Sept. 8, 2026. The tribunal said the woman did not file a response and was found in default.

The CRT said the woman’s conduct amounted to a “targeted campaign to harass and torment” the applicant and noted the images show the man’s face, making him “easily identifiable.” Drozdiak also addressed a limitation issue, saying a two-year limitation period applies to intimate image cases and that, in this case, the applicant filed more than two years after finding the first image.

Drozdiak wrote that the images remained online until December 2025 and that an intimate image shared online creates “fresh damage” each day it remains available, so the claim was not out of time, the tribunal said. The tribunal awarded $30,000 in compensatory damages plus $5,000 in aggravated damages.
