A yellow rainfall warning for Friday is associated with BC Ferries cancellations and thousands of BC Hydro customers without power in parts of B.C.
The Story
Environment Canada says the first storm in a series of wet and windy conditions is arriving on B.C.’s coast on Friday, with a yellow rainfall warning in effect for several regions including the North Shore, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Howe Sound.
The warning comes as heavy rain is expected to continue through the day, Environment Canada said. The weather is also linked to outages, with thousands of BC Hydro customers reported without power due to blustery conditions.
The hardest-hit areas include the Lower Mainland and Sunshine Coast, northern Vancouver Island and parts of southern Vancouver Island.
BC Ferries service is also affected by high winds and rough seas. On Friday, sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay were cancelled into the early afternoon, along with sailings between Tsawwassen and Duke Point.
Passengers are advised to check the BC Ferries website for the latest information on cancellations and delays. The storm is described as the first in a series, with another storm expected to move in later Saturday night, followed by a wet stretch returning Monday night through the remainder of the week.
Global BC meteorologist Mark Madryga said total rainfall over the next week is forecast at between 250 and 600 millimetres on west Vancouver Island and between 100 and 300 millimetres in the Lower Mainland.
