Motorcyclist arrested in Abbotsford after dangerous driving reaches up to 180 km/h on Highway 1

Abbotsford police say a 20-year-old man was arrested after a motorcycle allegedly drove dangerously through traffic and was tracked from the Surrey area to Highstreet Shopping Centre.

The Story

Abbotsford police say a motorcyclist was arrested after allegedly driving dangerously on Highway 1, including speeds of up to 180 km/h and evading law enforcement officers, following a coordinated multi-agency response last week.

Police say the incident began just after 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, when an RCMP Air 1 helicopter spotted a motorcycle travelling eastbound on Highway 1 in Surrey.

An officer aboard the helicopter alerted the BC Highway Patrol, which attempted a traffic stop along a stretch of the highway in Langley, Abbotsford police said. The rider did not stop and continued at excessive speeds, with Air 1 tracking the motorcycle from the air.

AbbyPD says the rider continued to drive dangerously, weaving through traffic, riding on the shoulder, and entering active Highway 1 construction zones. Police add that the motorcycle struck a traffic pylon at one point and the rider nearly lost control, but the driver continued to put motorists and themselves at risk.

Abbotsford police say its officers were notified as the motorcycle approached Abbotsford, and plainclothes officers were positioned to help with the arrest. Air 1 continued tracking the motorcycle as it exited Highway 1 and entered Highstreet Shopping Centre.

Police say the rider parked the motorcycle and fled on foot. AbbyPD officers located and arrested the suspect without further incident.

Abbotsford police say they arrested a 20-year-old man from Langley and are recommending charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, possession of stolen property, and driving while prohibited.
