Richmond voters will vote in the Oct. 17, 2026 municipal election using a double-sided ballot that lists candidates in three sections.
The Story
Richmond residents heading to the polls for the Oct. 17, 2026 municipal election will use a two-sided ballot that includes candidates in three alphabetical sections: Office of Mayor, Office of School Trustee, and Office of Councillor.
The ballot front includes candidates for mayor and trustee positions, while the back lists city councillor candidates, according to chief election officer Claudia Jesson.
The ballot will also include non-English names that candidates provided when filing their nomination documents, as well as elector organizations (slates or parties).
To be eligible to cast a ballot, voters must be Canadian citizens and at least 18 years old on Oct. 17, 2026, be residents of Richmond, and have lived in B.C. for at least six months before registering to vote on April 16. Voters must also not be disqualified from voting by law.
People who are not Richmond residents may still vote if they personally own property in Richmond for at least 30 days before registering, with the property not wholly or jointly owned by a corporation, business or organization.
For those looking to vote before election day, advanced voting runs starting this Saturday, Oct. 3, and continues on Oct. 7, 8, 9 and 10. Advance voting locations are handled by the Richmond Elections Office, and voters must bring two pieces of identification showing their name and home address to any advance polling location on those dates.
On General Voting Day, voters must go to their assigned location on their voter card.
Eligible voters can also request a mail ballot package. Online applications are available until Oct. 9 at 3 p.m., or by phone at 604-276-4100 until Oct. 15 at 3 p.m.
Mail ballot packages will be mailed from Sept. 28 to Oct. 7, and after Oct. 7 packages must be picked up at Richmond City Hall. Those who request a mail ballot cannot vote in person during advance voting or on general voting day.
Mail ballots must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8 p.m. on Oct. 17.
