Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand will address the United Nations General Assembly today, outlining Canada’s approach to Arctic sovereignty, support for Ukraine and Middle East diplomacy.
The Story
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is scheduled to deliver Canada’s address at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday at about 5 p.m. local time, following the visit of her counterparts from Oman and Tunisia.
Anand’s speech is expected to cover Canada’s support for Ukraine, its approach to the Middle East, and Arctic sovereignty. She also said the remarks will speak to the middle-power strategy Prime Minister Mark Carney outlined at the start of the year.
Anand will deliver the address in place of Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had been in New York from Monday to Wednesday. His officials said he could not deliver Canada’s UN address because of scheduling issues.
The foreign minister has previously emphasized that diplomacy requires engaging difficult conversations. On Friday, Anand said Canada does not “hide under a rock until conflicts disappear,” adding: “you’re not doing the work of diplomacy.”
