Chiefs fall 20-3 in Seattle as first loss of season highlights gaps on both sides of the ball

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season, going down 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday night.

The Story

The Kansas City Chiefs’ first setback of the 2026 season came in Seattle, where they were outplayed in a 20-3 loss to the Seahawks. Entering the night with a 3-3 record, Seattle’s offense struggled at times, but its overall play was more dominant and urgent than Kansas City’s throughout the game.

One bright moment for the Chiefs arrived late in the first half. With the Seahawks up 10-0, they faced second-and-goal from the three, but Sam Darnold’s throw was intercepted by cornerback Nohl Williams, who returned it 65 yards. The interception was Williams’ first career pick, and he finished as Kansas City’s top defender by a wide margin with double-digit tackles, including a tackle for loss, while allowing just two catches for 22 yards on three targets, according to PFF’s preliminary grades.

Offensively, Kansas City saw steady production from backup tight end Noah Gray. With Travis Kelce dropping two passes and Patrick Mahomes missing him on the opening drive, Gray caught all three of his targets for 44 yards, including a 19-yard reception, continuing a bounce-back stretch. On the defensive front, George Karlaftis recorded five pressures on Darnold and was responsible for the only quarterback hit among Chiefs pass rushers, matching his role as the more consistent performer on a night when the rest of the line struggled.

The losses column was anchored by the Chiefs’ inability to solve Seattle’s backfield. Kenneth Walker, who had rushed for 665 yards in his first five games and topped 100 yards in four of them, was limited to 36 yards on 14 carries for two season lows, and Kansas City’s run game never generated the momentum needed for its play-action to take hold. Mahomes also finished with 165 passing yards, his lowest output of the season.

Special teams issues added to Kansas City’s frustration. Harrison Butker was 69 percent on field goals after missing two kicks on Sunday night, including a 45-yard attempt wide right—the shortest miss of his season—and a 58-yarder that was short after going straight down the middle. With the Chiefs not reaching the red zone all night, the missed kicks still reflected a troubling downturn in their scoring margin.

Coverage breakdowns affected multiple downs, but cornerback L’Jarius Sneed took the most direct hit in the report. Sneed allowed all five of his targets to be caught for 83 yards in just 14 defensive snaps before being benched for Chris Roland-Wallace in the second half, when the defense performed considerably better. Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 129 yards in the first half—much of it while Sneed was on the field—and Sneed surrendered four first downs, three to Smith-Njigba and one to Cooper Kupp, in a game that remained out of reach for Kansas City.
