Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty told Albertans on Oct. 7 that a strong Canada includes a strong Alberta as the province prepares for an Oct. 19 Confederation referendum.
The Story
Federal Defence Minister David McGuinty delivered a pro-Canada message in Alberta on Oct. 7, as the province prepares to vote in a Confederation referendum on Oct. 19.
Speaking at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith beside him, McGuinty said Alberta is “a national reminder on how to think big and build big.”
He also described Confederation as “a national bargain renewed through generations by what Canadians do for one another, particularly in wartime.”
McGuinty said Alberta is receiving $8 billion in ongoing spending, including $550 million to establish the western operating base for the Air Force’s CC-33-Husky fleet.
Smith said the funding places Alberta “at the forefront of air defence,” and agreed the announcement is also about showing Canada and Ottawa can work together.
The referendum ballot includes 10 questions, including whether the province should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on leaving the country.
