The City of Victoria issued a warning after a barred owl attacked a person on Dallas Road twice in three days.
The Story
The City of Victoria issued a warning after the same person was attacked by an owl at a park twice over a three-day span.
In a statement, the city said it received a complaint on Oct. 4 about a barred owl attack on the shared pedestrian and bike walkway along Dallas Road between Douglas Road and the Beacon Hill Park Road exit.
The city said owl attacks are typically linked to “territory enforcement” as adult owls look to establish new territory or protect their existing space.
To raise awareness, the city installed signs for park users about the aggressive owl in the area, the statement said. It added that this was the first time the city has installed such signs and that they will be taken down when the activity subsides.
The Canadian Wildlife Federation is cited as saying the barred owl, a large species with a round head and no ear tufts, is found throughout British Columbia and in the central Prairies.
