The Story
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre paid tribute to a Canada Revenue Agency employee who was killed in Montreal on Tuesday.
The Union of Taxation Employees identified the woman as Leïla Ben Salem, 45. Carney offered condolences to Ben Salem’s family, colleagues and loved ones on behalf of the federal government and said she was working when she was attacked.
In remarks in the House of Commons, Carney described Ben Salem as dedicated to serving Canadians and said the federal government would do everything it could to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice.
Montreal police said officers found Ben Salem at her apartment in the Ville-Marie borough after responding to a welfare check call on Tuesday. Police said they have spoken with a person of interest but that there have been no arrests as of Thursday afternoon.
Poilievre also issued condolences, calling Ben Salem a “treasured member of the public service” who “tragically lost her life.”
