Vancouver nephrologist Daniel Schwartz and his son Jack will perform two December magic shows at Alliance Française Vancouver to raise funds for cancer and kidney organizations in B.C.
The Story
Vancouver nephrologist Daniel Schwartz and his 16-year-old son Jack Schwartz will perform an intimate theatrical magic show at Alliance Française Vancouver in December, with proceeds supporting two health organizations.
The first performance will be held on Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. to support the BC Cancer Foundation. The second show will take place on Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. to support the Kidney Foundation of Canada, B.C., and Yukon Branch.
Schwartz, who is also a longtime magician, said he has performed magic since he was seven and had his first paid gig at age 13 or 14. He later stopped doing magic for a period when his studies intensified, and he is now 51.
Schwartz works as a nephrologist helping patients in the Vancouver area, and he said he brings a bit of his magic background into his practice, particularly in moments when patients may be uncomfortable or not feel like talking.
He described one approach in his office, saying that he sometimes tells patients to “pick a card,” adding that “within a couple of minutes, people are like, 'OK, you're all right.'”
According to Schwartz, his son Jack became interested in magic at age 11 and learned with help from his father and by watching online videos. Schwartz said Jack has also performed at his own benefit shows for the Kidney Foundation.
The shows are called These Magic Moments and are built around the idea that people are remembered through special moments, using magic as a way to explore that theme, according to Schwartz.
