The Story
A preliminary magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Panama on Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.
The quake occurred at about 6:20 p.m., at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), roughly 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of Río Grande.
The 6.1 tremor came after two stronger earthquakes—a magnitude 7.7 event and a magnitude 6.6 earthquake—along with aftershocks that roiled southern Panama on Friday afternoon. The Friday earthquakes collapsed buildings near the epicentre and prompted evacuations across the country.
