Utah Mammoth score four straight after early deficit to beat Buffalo Sabres 4-1

The Utah Mammoth gave up the opening goal Saturday night, then answered with four in a row and rode 23 saves from Karel Vejmelka to a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.

Buffalo struck first, but the tie did not last long

Buffalo had the first breakthrough at 8:00 of the opening period when Tage Thompson scored on a wrist shot, with Rasmus Dahlin collecting the assist. For a Sabres side looking for a cleaner night at home, it was the kind of start that should have offered a platform.

Utah wiped that advantage away quickly. Kailer Yamamoto levelled the game at 10:12, finishing a play set up by Barrett Hayton and Mikhail Sergachev. The equalizer arrived only 2:12 after Thompson’s goal, and that quick reply kept Buffalo from building any separation in the first period.

From there, the game began to lean toward Utah’s stronger all-around numbers. The Mammoth finished the night with a 53.3 per cent edge in the faceoff circle and a 33-17 advantage in hits, useful signs that they were winning enough of the smaller battles even before the scoreboard fully turned in their favour.

Two late goals in the second changed the night

The decisive push came late in the middle frame. Nick Schmaltz put Utah ahead 2-1 at 15:23 of the second period, scoring on a wrist shot with Logan Cooley and Clayton Keller drawing the assists. After a first period that ended even, that goal gave the Mammoth their first lead and changed the shape of the night.

Buffalo then let the game get away in a short stretch. Anders Lee scored at 17:24, just 2:01 after Schmaltz’s go-ahead marker, extending Utah’s lead to 3-1. John Marino and Yamamoto assisted on the play, and the sequence gave Utah breathing room while adding to a growing list of multi-point contributors.

Any realistic Sabres push needed an early third-period answer. Instead, Utah delivered the next blow. Marino scored on a slap shot at 1:45 of the third, with Hayton and Lee assisting, and the Mammoth had their fourth unanswered goal. What had been a one-goal game late in the second period was suddenly a three-goal deficit, and Buffalo never recovered from that swing.

Our take: Utah owned the useful margins

A 4-1 road win usually rests on more than one thing, and Utah checked several important boxes. The Mammoth won the special-teams battle by going 2-for-5 on the power play while limiting Buffalo to 1-for-4. They also blocked 24 shots, five more than the Sabres, and Vejmelka finished the rest with 23 saves and a .958 save percentage. Once Buffalo scored at 8:00 of the first, Utah did not allow another goal.

The offence was shared rather than carried by one player, which is often a healthy look for a team on the road. Yamamoto had a goal and an assist. Hayton produced two assists. Lee and Marino each finished with a goal and an assist. Schmaltz added the eventual game-winner, while Cooley, Keller and Sergachev all helped build the scoring line. Utah outshot Buffalo 29-24, and Colten Ellis’ 25 saves were not enough to keep the Sabres within reach after the second-period turn.

Buffalo can point to a few solid individual nights, but not enough finish around them. Thompson scored the lone goal and registered six shots, while Dahlin contributed the assist and blocked five shots. Beyond that, the Sabres’ biggest problem was simple and visible on the scoresheet: they scored first, then conceded four straight. Utah’s own result was convincing, though the Mammoth still handed over the puck 19 times and took 23 penalty minutes, numbers that could become more costly on another night. For this one, the goals, the special teams and the late-second-period surge mattered most.
