VPD reminds drivers and families to be extra cautious as daylight fades after pedestrian collision

Vancouver Police say a seven-year-old was struck by a vehicle after attempting to cross mid-block as visibility was reduced Thursday morning.

The Story

The Vancouver Police Department is reminding drivers and families to exercise extra caution as daylight hours wane and visibility becomes more challenging.

Police said officers were in the area of East Pender Street and Victoria Drive around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday when they witnessed a seven-year-old girl attempt to cross the street mid-block between parked vehicles to reach her parents’ vehicle on the opposite side.

According to the VPD, the girl ran into the roadway and was struck by a vehicle travelling at approximately 20 km/h. The driver was unable to see the child before she entered the roadway.

Police said the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The girl was transported to hospital and has been released with minor injuries.

Constable Megan Lui said the incident is “an important reminder for pedestrians to exercise additional caution and for drivers to stay vigilant, especially during darker morning and evening commutes.”

With Halloween approaching, the VPD said it encourages families to plan ahead and remind children to use crosswalks, stay visible, and be aware of traffic when out in their neighbourhoods.
