The Story
Rapper Rick Ross was arrested in Miami Beach early Thursday and charged with battery connected to a domestic violence accusation, authorities said.
According to online court records, Ross’s legal name is William Roberts II and he faces a felony charge of battery by strangulation, as well as a misdemeanor battery charge.
An attorney for Ross, 50, said in a statement that Ross is being wrongfully accused by an ex-girlfriend and that she did not file a police report until a month after the incident was allegedly said to have taken place. The attorney also said Ross has pleaded not guilty and asked that people not prejudge the situation.
Jail records showed Ross was being held Thursday morning on $5,000 bail, and an arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 22.
Ross is a longtime South Florida resident who gained prominence in 2006 with his debut single “Hustlin’.” His debut album, “Port of Miami,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum, and his other releases include “Trilla” in 2008 and “Deeper Than Rap” in 2009. He has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and founded Maybach Music Group in 2008. His most recent album, “Set In Stone,” was released in July.
